Since moving to Austin in 1988, Liz Carmack has worked as a professional communicator for a state representative, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, KLRU-TV, and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). During her 11 years at the TCEQ, she helped scientists, engineers, and policy makers communicate complicated scientific and environmental issues to the public through publications and websites.
Science and writing have long been two of her favorite interests. She majored in chemistry before switching to journalism at Oklahoma State University.
Liz began her professional communications career as a reporter and editor at Oklahoma’s third-largest daily newspaper, and later earned a master’s degree in mass communication at the University of Leicester in Leicester, England. Her graduate studies were sponsored by a Rotary International Scholarship.
Liz moonlighted as a freelance writer and webmaster before leaving the TCEQ to research and write Historic Hotels of Texas: A Traveler’s Guide and start her own business. Her travel writing extends to the web; she serves as the Austin City Expert for the international travel website, homeandabroad.com.
She is a member of the Writers' League of Texas, Freelance Austin, and the Association for Women in Communications. |
